“Mr. Clark, would you like something to drink?” He sat up straight.

“Actually, Sweet Pea, I would like something to eat. Y’all got something?” I nodded.

“Is fried chicken, collards and hoe cakes good for you, sir?” He licked his lips as if

he were more than satisfied.

“That’ll be fine, gal.” He cleared his throat and looked me up and down.

I went into the kitchen to finish the plate I was making and brought it out to him

with a glass of lemonade. At this point he was already sitting at the table and glaring

at the food as if he was some dog that ain’t ever seen food a day in his life. He

snatched the plate out of my hands and commenced eating, and boy can that man

eat. I declare, he ate the whole damn plate faster than I can spell my mama’s whole

name! Giving out a hearty belch, Mr. Clark reclined back in his chair.
